Joan Weisshaar

Obituary of Joan Weisshaar

Webster:  Passed away after a long struggle with dementia on December 2, 2023 at the age of 88.  She is survived by her daughters, Karen and Janet (Roger); son, Charles (Lauren); 5 grandchildren, Regina (Thomas), Emily, Charles (Jessica), Matthew (Leah) and Alicia; great-granddaughter, Mia. She was predeceased by her husband, Karl; brother, Bernard Mensing; and parents, Regina and Bernard Mensing.

Joan was a wife, mom, grandma, and recently, great-grandma.  She was a master seamstress (she even made a couple of wedding dresses for friends & family), talented baker (we used to get frequent requests for her brownies), and meticulous gardener (before she would ring the doorbell at a house, she would be weeding the front garden!)

As a mom, the value of family and friends was evident.   Weekends were often spent with her husband’s parents & his sister's family at their home on Conesus Lake or with her parents & great aunt & her brother's family at our family cottage on East Bay. Holidays included visiting all the grandparents, mom's brother's family, her cousins and extended family.  My parents always took us on an annual gathering with our Canadian "family" during Labor Day.

As a grandma, Joan was awesome.  She was there from the first night she became a grandma.  She would babysit on a moment's notice, she made outfits and quilts for all of our kids, and she & dad attended every game, concert and competition the grandkids kids were in.

Joan spent her last 7+ years at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Webster.  Even with a failing memory, she was often very smiley and loved the staff.  We cannot thank them enough for her amazing care.

Our hope is that she is now happily reunited with all her favorites; her parents, her brother, our dad, her cousins, Marilyn Semrau & Carolyn Thomson, friends: Vic & Wendy Johansen, and Ginny Deutchbein.

There will be a celebration of Joan's life in the spring of 2024 for friends and family at a time to be announced.  In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in Joan's memory or donating to Holy Trinity Church, The Maplewood Nursing Home or the Webster Knights of Columbus.  Willard H. Scott Funeral Home.
