Bernie was a long time neighbor and good friend. She would often walk over to our house and simply come in as a dear family member would. When we decided to sell our home and move out of state, Bernie had tears in her eyes as we said our good byes. That image has always stuck with me. She was a fiercely independent woman who never backed away from a challenge. I last saw Bernie in 2019 when I returned to Williamson for my class reunion. I am so glad I took the time to see her as it turned out to be the last time I would see her. May she now rest in peace reunited with her beloved Oskar.
