"Mr. B" as I will always call him was my yearbook advisor his first year at RLT 1967-68 and I was its editor (I am on his right in yearbook staff picture). He usually called me by my last name for some reason, which I found very funny. It was the 50th anniversary of the yearbook, and he encouraged me to break a lot of rules. The size was enlarged from 8-1/2 x 11 to 9 x 12, senior books were different color than rest of students, student designed the cover, section dividers with holes in them, colored paper pages (not so popular). His constant response was "Why not?"
That's him in the black and white photo below, posing as owner for the business section divider of the yearbook at a bank in the Webster shopping mall. The yearbook's theme was Time, and we wanted a picture of someone closing a store at 9 p.m. No one was around, so Mr. B just walked up and assumed the position. I took the picture, and there was a great deal of joking about him setting off the alarm and spending the rest of the year in the slammer for robbing a bank.
He was a great mentor for someone starting out in the newspaper business, and we have kept in touch over the years. Most recently my sister moved to a Backus Road house near his home, and he'd stop in when I was visiting for an update. He always had a cheerful word and a funny story, but also that rare understanding between human beings of what it takes and what you go through to get by in this profession. Still at it, thanks to his encouragement. What a guy to stay in my memory for 54 years.

Lee and I shared a love of journalism and baseball, plus the popular music of our era. He and I once re-painted the poles that held candles for the New Year's Eve services at Church of the Good Sheperd, while listening to the music of Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, and others. My most enduring memory of him is of the dinners my Barbara and I enjoyed with Lee and his Barbara. Good conversations, lots of laughs. Lee and Barbara were a couple who truly adored each other. At his wife's funeral, I remember that Lee recited the lyrics from the song "I'll be Seeing You." I like to believe that he and Barbara are now singing it together.

What a great teacher- I took my first advertising class at RL Thomas from him, and ended up doing it for a living. He was always so fun to talk to. He was our "Mystery Guest" for Bill White's Opus about 10 years ago and had the group in stitches telling stories about Bill's hapless radar episodes on the Finger Lakes. Rest in Peace with our Lord, Lee, may he protect and keep you, rejoin you with Barbara and be with your family during this time.

Yes, I still have my old first-draft manuscripts with Lee's notations in red ink along the margins. He was the first editor of my young writing career who was a no-nonsense teacher of writing. Lee would remark in red, sometimes whole paragraphs showing the errors in my writing. I probably took a few years off his life from all the stress of buying red pens. Looking back, Lee was just the one I needed at the time who didn't pamper you, but if he did find a nugget he liked, he would tell you. He prepared you for all the ups and downs of "the writing life." Lee gave you tough skin for the form letter rejections to come. Thank you for all your lessons.

My first experience in team teaching was with Lee at RL Thomas. It was both instructive and memorable! Lee was a fun colleague who often had both a humorous and a pointed comment on the issue at hand. Years later we enjoyed breakfasts at T’s with Lee and a group of retired educators. The world was a better place because of him.

I worked with Lee at RL Thomas and Schroeder HS. He was a brilliant, wise and confident teacher and he touched many lives in and out of that classroom. He wrote a memorable story in his weekly Webster Herald column on my home and my life in the village, interviewing me and my mom on the front porch. An unforgettable human with a small-town, loving heart whose conversations had a huge influence on me. Sympathy to the daughters he adored.

Lee was always smiling ~ a happy man with love for his family. I would see Lee walking on many side streets around the area of his home; plus away too far...sometimes with his walking stick (a large one, at that). Years back I use to enjoy reading his views in the Webster Herald and sometimes Barbara would join.
We always want our parents to live forever, but when they say good-bye to us, there is many reasons and I say that Barbara was calling him home...My thoughts ! God Bless you girls, that made your dad so happy and let him into your lives. His eyes always would light up when I asked him on the street (I was a neighbor for many years) PEACE.

Lee had a way of treating his journalism students as adults, giving them great responsibility for their projects. We grew a lot under his gentle guidance. In later years we managed to keep up a correspondence that kept me current on Webster and the world. When I got back to Webster breakfast with Lee was always on the schedule. He was indeed a great story teller.

Mr Burgess was a beacon of light for me as a transfer student from Ohio my junior year of high school. He was my “fellow Ohioan”. Mr Burgess took me under his wing and became of good friend and mentor! I have such windsurfing memories being a part of the news paper at RL Thomas. RIP Mr Burgess
