Maria had invited me as a fellow architect and fellow design center co
-founder in Baltimore to speak in her hometown about the post industrial city.
Her welcome was warm and she introduced me to her Rochester in words and in tours in her car.
She knew so much and had the enthusiasm that allowed her to move confidently towards taking agency in her own future and that of her city.
(At the time she looked for a new home.). I felt I had gained a friend in Rochester and we stayed in touch about urban planning. In 2021 she wrote to me: “We bought a lovely 1920's colonial in great condition and thoroughly love living in the City. We go for walks everyday and Highland park is nearby.”
It was a shock when my latest mail to her was returned with the news about her death, now already several months back.
I will remember Maria as a true Rochester champion who at the same time was anything but parochial.

Maria has been in my life for many years. I first met her thru her Mom and loved going to their beautiful store. Her design mentality was present everywhere in the store and in how they helped a customer pick out a wonderful gift. That eye toward design followed her thru the rest of her career and as she became the voice of the Design Center. One favorite memory was watching a reporter follow her through the concepts for ILN and Maria convincing others that back to the grid was a viable solution. She was an advocate and a loyal friend to Rochester. We miss her voice. Her family came first and her devotion was a pleasure to witness.

My memory is of meeting Maria through our Harley School connection. The first thing I asked was if she was related to Bruno Ferguiele, who taught me at ERHS. Small world. She was so present, sharing and interested, and interesting to talk with! I had hopes of becoming better friends after moving into her neighborhood recently. My heart hurts for her and all of you. Peace.

Maria was so incredibly inspiring and generous. I first met her at a street fair where she was introducing the Community Design Center. She had a great memory and remembered my daughter and me when we met up later, usually at her inspiring events. During my last week in Rochester and moving to Germany, she invited me out to lunch, just to wish me and my family good luck in our future life and work. We hardly knew each other before that, but knew each other much better after that wonderful lunch. I really admired her vision, her optimism, her warmth, her smile, and her ideas for making the world a better place.

Maria helped us learn about key connections between land use and transportation as we developed our Color Your Community Green toolkit to support people working to advance action on climate change at the community level. Amazing knowledge and ability to communicate it! I wish I could have known her better. I am thankful that I got to meet her.

From Hellas
Maria and I have somehow grown together despite an ocean of distance. We have walked parallel life paths that have kept us in touch and allowed us to exchange affection even if at a distance and to share many moments of joy.
Her passion for photography has allowed us to fix forever those moments of life that accompany me and warm my heart.
I still remember our first excursion in the Aegean, she photographed everything even the inside of the small “vehicles, that more than airplanes looked like jumbles, that brought us from one Island to the other, laughing and telling me “at least if we don’t get there, our parents will know why”.
I loved her way of being serious and deep and reliable but also light-hearted enough to defuse the events of everyday living.
Maria leaves an unbridgeable void with the hope that the many good memories will somehow make us feel less alone without her.

My favorite memory of Maria was when we went skiing at Mont Tremblant in Quebec. Her grace and style on the slopes was musical. I will remember her gusto and passion for life that was infectious just like her laughter.

Heartbroken.
Her spirit and passion was strong doing whatever it took to battle her cancer. We met many times at the JCC during Covid-19 when able to attend the center (with her mom she called her best friend and cheerleader). Always positive and hopeful.
First time we saw each other at the JCC she had lost her hair and wearing a head scarf and mask I knew instantly it was Maria by the twinkle in her eyes and broad smile under the mask.
Truly an inspiration and true leader for others to follow. She lived with grace and dignity, even though she knew the odds of beating her cancer were slim.
I will miss my friend and bike rider enthusiast.
May she rest in peace.

As a fellow architect I was always thrilled to know a person so wise and enthusiastic as Maria was leading the charge at the design center. I’ve recently become involved with Rochester community bikes and it’s amazing to me to find how many times I learn that one of the walking Saints of Rochester has preceded me.

I’ll always cherish the memories of my 2019 road trip from Rochester to CNU Louisville with Maria and Julie Domaratz. We were three urbanists exploring Columbus, Cincinnati and Louisville. Maria was a skillful leader and passionate about building community. I am a better person because of her and our community is a better place.

I knew I would be friends with Maria long before she did. Our boys attended the Harley School together, so I would often see her at school functions as she would never miss an opportunity to engage with friends old and new. I was attracted to her energy from the get-go. I slowly entered her circle, meeting each Friday at Starbucks – first just two of us and then multiplying as she would pull over another table and then another and then another to make room. There were never too many people at a table or in a room for Maria. She fed off the energy and then gave it back to all who shared her space. One day over coffee, I mentioned a new sport I’d taken up – platform tennis – and was looking for a partner. By the end of the day, Maria had bought a paddle and away we went. We spent many a cold Monday night playing, strategizing, swearing, drinking and laughing together. She had an infectious joy for life that all who met her couldn’t help but adopt. Many things will never be the same without her, and I wouldn’t want them to be. That empty seat at the table, Maria, will always be reserved for you. I love you.

So many memories. So much love. She was and will always remain one of my dearest friends. I first met Maria on the playground at The Harley School right before the start of a new school year when our sons were entering first grade. I had just moved to Rochester not knowing a soul and I can’t imagine a better ambassador for Rochester than Maria. She helped me and my family navigate so many ups and downs in our adjustment to a new home, school and city. From day one she greeted me with a bright smile, an extended hand, an open heart and a huge passion for her family, friends and community. We became fast friends and for these past 15 years we have shared our lives deeply - our hopes and fears, our passions, ideals, celebrations and challenges. And no matter where we were or what we were doing, it was always a privilege to be in the same space as her. I will miss all the times we sat at community functions, events, restaurants and coffee shops and in our own homes eating, drinking, laughing, talking intimately with honesty and mindfulness - sometimes just the two of us for hours on end and often in a large, ever-expanding group of friends that she attracted with her warmth, generosity and enthusiasm for life. We were all like bees to honey and Maria was both our nectar and our queen bee. Being with her was always a feeling of coming home and finding the best parts of yourself. It might sound cliche to say she made the world a better place, but she truly, deeply did. And her love and selfless acts of service and kindness will continue to ripple out into the world doing good and elevating us in both simple and profound ways. It is an honor to be her friend and her love continues to inform and infuse me every day.
