Obituary of Vernon R. Wyland
Webster: Thursday, November 5, 2020, after a short illness at the age of 89. Born on May 14, 1931 to Nellie and Virgil Wyland of Onawa, Iowa. He was drafted while he was an undergraduate college student into the Korean War and served in the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC. In 1956, Vern graduated from Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. He continued his graduate studies at Columbia University School of Education and completed both his Masters and Doctorate in Education. He spent the next 40 years working in public school administration in Michigan, West Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania. In retirement, he enjoyed refinishing antiques, gardening, and his grandchildren.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beth; son, Mark (Lisa) Wyland; daughters, Jill Wyland (Jack Stanners) and Gayle (Todd) Reed; son-in-law, David VanDerWoude; grandchildren, Hannah and Trent Wyland; Abigayle VanDerWoude. He is predeceased by his daughter, Wendy VanDerWoude.
No funeral service will be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a private celebration of his life will be held in the near future. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Rochester General Hospital for their compassionate care.
