This is what I told Dave on the way down besides thanking him for a second family in high school (the cool Cleavers); It's her pranks and eternal presence that nudge us now like a friend's shoulder block in the mosh pit. A friend had me laughing in tears over how stuck on life she was in high school. Stephanie had a thing for super glue that had a big crescendo. It started with super gluing quarters by pay phones and we'd watching people try to pick them up and doing it near parking meters. I wish more than anything I'd been there for the day she got a high school teacher by the seat of his pants for wreckless eyeballing. She was never suspended or expelled and she was probably the most popular girl for at least a day.
Steph was a girl who had your back too. When a fight broke out at a PIL concert she had my back quite literally. As John Lydon sang, "I could be wrong I could be right," my right long shot came out after a scuffle with some other drunk teenage midget about her boyfriend checking me out. My lucky strike ended when she got me in a headlock, pulling my hair. When it seemed like I was done for Stephanie jumped on her back and started giving her the ' fisticuffs'. I stood and watched the whole thing from the crowd for the rest of the song, Stephanie hitting her good. Well before the song was over, we high-fives in the crowd together when the girl and her boyfriend were thrown out.
That said, when I went to hospital I played PIL Rise to her in her coma. I told her "This is why I'm here today Stephanie. You're a fighter."
You never think of outliving someone like Stephanie. Her moxie spelled she'll make it...until it didn't.
One thing I had to clear the air on is she was no Deacon Blue. At her worst, a short party, an endless summer that ended with a winter rave in Newberg, she was fun and sweet. She drove me around in a sombrero listening to Rage Against the machine and showed me a blue sunburst on her arm.
Meanwhile, we took Buddy, a 30-something guy with Cerebrral Palsy to dinner every week and laughed with him as he'd start yelping with joy to be at Pizza Hut because they'd never been anywhere before. She lived and work with people most people just tuck somewhere in storage and bring out like Christmas ornaments. It was the time of their lives and it was ours too.
I kept my secret and nudged at methodone at least every week, but until yesterday it was a secret between us. It wasn't at work and it wasn't all the time. I knew she wasn't in for more than a season or two of being needled.
At the time, no one knew what her deal was but me and her inner circle. They just knew Stephanie had off the hook parties with crowds pouring out on the roof eaves. It was a 3-story house!
You never what she'd do but it would be memorable. Allen Ginsberg got a brownie from her after belting out Kaddish with an accordium to a sold-out auditorium. I wish he would've been there yesterday. Maybe he was in spirit? I think he was.
Sadly, there was a winsome fragile side to her and that's what won, but not by her hand or choice. When she lost we lost. She sits like a fingerprint, on of her hers on mine, til I go too. Is she could, she'd probably would softly croon the words from her favorite song to comfort us like a haunted lullaby: "There's noooooo way of knooooowing knoowing how long it will last."

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I have so many fond memories of Stephanie and I, when I would spend the night at the house on Weston Ave, listening to The Dead Milkmen and The Cure. We had just recently reconnected on facebook. She will be missed.

I just want to say that Stephanie will always hold a special place in my heart and was such an amazing girl, so sassy and had the neatest style about her, she was a very passionate person and wore her heart on her sleeve, we had some very long talks and really understood each other, and she helped me at a time in my life when I needed someone who really understood, I remember how much she truly loved Scott and that He was so "good for her" as she put it, and how He grounded her and just truly adored her, and I remember her dog Lucky and how much she loved Him and vice versa. My heart goes out to her whole family in this very hard time, and Scott, I think most of you and pray that you will find some peace somehow and that I am sure you know how much you were loved for the years you had together, I am sure she and Lucky dog are running all around together.
