Kay Elizabeth Johnson Obituary
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Kay Elizabeth Johnson, February 27, 2026, born June 20th, 1945, in Jamestown, NY, after some declining health over the last couple of years, and a brief illness. She was surrounded by family, love and light; ready to pass on from this world to the next. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
She was a devoted wife to her husband, Keith for over 60 years; mother to Kris Johnson (Sondra), Kitty Schoenherr (Doug) and Kurt Johnson (Louise); and sister of Mary Ann Wager and Betty Lou Gleason. She was predeceased by her father, Horace “Hort” Casten; mother, Louise Casten; brother, Richard; brothers-in-law, Leroy (Jim) Wager and Patt Gleason; nephew Randy Hill. She is survived by her husband, children, sisters, grandchildren (8), nieces (4) and cousins (many).
She and Keith started their family in the city of Rochester, and then shortly after moved to Webster, where they lived for over 40 years, forming wonderful friendships within their neighborhood, while bringing up their 3 children, and she, working full-time as a bookkeeper. She and Keith were also foster parents for a time. She was always welcoming to any of their children’s friends that came into their home, where many called her “Mom” or “Ma”.
She worked for a few different companies, then opened her own payroll business, Personal Payroll Service, until she decided to sell it a few years later when she and Keith, while caring for her mother in Webster, decided to move to South Carolina, closer to her sister, Betty Lou, and her husband Patt. They formed new friendships in the community and within the church, until they decided to move back to Webster about 17 years later
She was known for her frivolity and laughter. She loved to read books (particularly romance novels), old movies, Broadway musicals, and music from the Oak Ridge boys, to Josh Grobin and Michael Jackson. She also loved her crafts, having a separate craft room in all the homes they had lived in. She and Keith would go to craft shows, where she would sell handmade jewelry, quilts, scarves, and more, while Keith would sell his woodworking. Even when she was unable to do those things anymore, she would sit in her chair doing diamond art for gifts, just to keep herself busy. She was best known, amongst those she encountered, for asking any and all questions about their lives whenever they saw her.
She loved talking to neighbors, jokingly harassing her children, sisters, nieces, and of course, her husband…and of late, watching the birds outside her back window, while hanging out with her beloved cats and taking care of her orchids.
She was loved, and will be missed, but we will keep her alive with the memories we share. Arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers – please donate to Lollipop Farm, 99 Victor Rd., Fairport, NY 14450.
