John A. Van Hooydonk Obituary

With deep love and gratitude, we remember John A. Van Hooydonk of Webster, New York, who passed gently in the comfort of home on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at 94 years young. He was at peace and ready to meet his Lord and Savior.

John was born on December 14, 1930, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Henry and Vera Mae Van Hooydonk. At just 17, he joined the United States Army, serving in the occupation of Germany after World War II. Later he bravely volunteered to serve on the front lines of the Korean Conflict, where he earned his Combat Infantry Badge. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant, he dedicated himself to service in both active duty and 25 years in the Army Reserve. His commitment to his country was matched only by his devotion to his family.

When John returned home, he joined his brother Hank at the Rochester Telephone Company. Beginning as a lineman and later becoming a trusted telephone repairman, he worked with integrity, skill, and quiet pride. He was admired by those who worked alongside him, but his greatest joy was always found at home.

To us — his wife, his children, and his grandchildren — John was the heart of our family. He cheered at our games, encouraged us in our studies, and showed up for important moments. He loved to read, to learn, and to share his wisdom in simple, steady ways. His presence filled our lives with strength, humor, and warmth.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Nancy Rich Van Hooydonk; his sons, John (Cindy) Van Hooydonk and Paul Van Hooydonk; his daughters, Sharon (Bruce) Rohdenburg and Christy (Jeremy) Buley; his grandchildren, Julia Frederick, Sara (Reid) Nees, Andrew Van Hooydonk and Veronica Frederick; his siblings, Doris Daycock, Betty Wiemer and Richard (Sandy) Van Hooydonk; his sister-in-law, Joyce Lang; his brother-in-law, Gary Rich; many nieces and nephews; and life long friends, Robert “Bob” and Gail Renehan. He now joins in rest with his parents, Henry and Vera Van Hooydonk; his brother, Henry “Hank” Van Hooydonk; his brothers-in-law, Ben Wiemer, Charles “Chuck” Daycock, Stanley Rich, Nelson Rich and Robert “Bob” Lang; his niece, Anne Van Hooydonk Christopher; and his nephew, Kevin Rich. We are endlessly grateful for his love and example, and we will carry him in our hearts always.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 30th at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 1130 Webster Rd., Webster, NY 14580 at 1:00 PM.  Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 PM.
