      Predeceased by his parents, Robert C. and Joan [M.] Spence Grout. Survived by his sisters, Jeanne Sandahl and her children, Erik and Brian; Amy (Garry) Sullivan and their children, Elizabeth [Charity], David [Teresa], Michael, Emily, Grace [Steve] Pass (and their children Wilson and Lester), and Peter; Maria (Gabriel) Pellegrino and their children, Anthony and Robert. Uncle and aunts and their children, John's cousins: Uncle Thomas (Aunt Suzanne) Grout and their children Melissa (Andrew) Smith, Robert, David (Joy); and Aunt Barbara Spence Barnett and her sons Joseph (deceased) and Scott (Polly) and a number of his cousins’ children.

      John graduated from Greece Arcadia High School, and got degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and University of Illinois. He worked in California and New York as a financial computer programmer [VISA, Oracle, Citibank, and others]. He sang in many choral groups over the years. John was also fond of Poker and participated in tournaments across the country. He retired to Texas in 2023.
