Obituary of George Haynes

Webster, NY: George Nelson Haynes passed peacefully at home on the first day of his 86th year surrounded by close family, after an almost year-long struggle with cancer.

George was born on April 21, 1939, and grew up in Brockport, NY, on the Erie Canal.  He was predeceased by his parents Nelson and Elvina Haynes and his beloved sister Glenda Flueck.   He spent much of his adult life in Webster, including the last 30 years.

George attended Alfred State College where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He spent his career at Xerox and retired early to pursue his real passion – CARS!

George spent his life buying, selling, tinkering, restoring, and driving antique British sports cars.   MG’s, Triumphs, Lotus’, you name it – he loved them.  He enjoyed road trips, auto-crossing and served as pit crew for several of his friends.  He established a side business with his good friend Gil Langswager – “Partners in Grime”, where they lovingly restored 12 cars.  George was also a long-term member of the MG Car Club of Western NY, where he served in a variety of roles including editing the newsletter, Spokes, and organizing numerous events and rallies. Additionally, he was a founding member and active participant of the Greater Rochester Triumph Touring Club.

George also enjoyed spending time in the Finger Lakes region, swimming, was an avid Yankees fan, fixing things, reading detective novels, and watching Antiques Roadshow.

What George enjoyed most though, was helping others.  He was a good friend and mentor to many and was generous with his time and knowledge.  He will be missed.

George is survived by his daughters Kathy Cleary and Stephanie Haynes; stepson Jesse Beaton (Amanda Eckel); grandsons Patrick and Mackenzie Cleary; numerous cousins and a legion of “Car Nuts”.

Many thanks to Dr. Erika Ramsdale, Nurse Carol, and the rest of the crew at Wilmot Cancer Center @ Highland Hospital, who expertly guided us through the stages of George’s illness.  And, to the angels at URMC Hospice.

Calling hours will be on Friday May 2, 2025 from 4-7 PM at Willard H. Scott Funeral Home, 12 South Avenue, Webster, NY 14580. A celebration of George’s life will be scheduled in the near future.  In lieu of flowers, donations can made to Alfred State College Automotive Trades Department, 2530 River Road, Wellsville NY 14895 or to URMC Hospice at 2180 Empire Blvd, Webster, NY  14580.
