John A. Maines Obituary

John A. Maines, 83, of Webster and formerly of Naples, Fl., and Williamsville, NY, passed away peacefully on March 17th, surrounded by family after a long illness.

John is survived by his bride of 62 years, Marianne; his children, Lauren (Dan) Ramich, Matthew (Rhonda) Maines, Mark (Marion) Maines, and John I. (Stephanie) Maines. He is also survived by his brother, Fred (Maryann) Maines; brother- and sister-in-law, Glen and Beverly Van Derzee. John was a devoted grandfather to Tyler, Justin, Cameron, Drew, Zach, Aiden, Julia and Dominic Maines, and John and Daniel Ramich. He was also very close to his nephews and niece, Jeff (Heather) Van Derzee, Jennifer (Brian) Perelstein and Glen Jr. (Shelly) Van Derzee;  many cousins, and his much-loved cousin Shelly (Greg) Masceri. John was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Elsie Maines, and in-laws Samuel and Josephine Scrofano.

John was raised at Packanack Lake, New Jersey, where he developed a lifelong love of fishing, water sports, and nature. He attended The University of Rochester and had a successful executive career retiring from The Monarch Life Insurance Company. In semi-retirement, he started a DBA delivery service and enjoyed bragging about his stamina for long drives and lifting heavy boxes in his old age— a classic John move. He had a sharp wit, a generous spirit, and above all else, unwavering commitment to his wife, children, and grandchildren.  He relished his time with his friends and family on fishing trips, vacations, birthdays, and holiday gatherings. He especially loved to dine out with family and friends any chance he could get. He enjoyed playing bridge with his wife and friends, especially his friend of over sixty years, Jerry Manioci. John also traveled frequently with his wife and family, enjoying cruises, trips to Garden City, South Carolina, and any excuse to get to the beach. He was generous and lavished yearly vacations for his children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories for all. John was well-traveled, well-read, and always well-fed. He was deeply loved by his family.

His family would like to acknowledge the special care, devotion, and attention his three special angels, Zoraida, Mily, and Tina gave him as he battled the end stages of cancer, as well as the U of R Home-hospice team. John moved on to the other side exactly as he wanted, and for that, his family is grateful.

Calling hours will be held at The Willard H. Scott Funeral Home, 12 South Avenue, Webster, on Saturday, March 22nd, between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society in John A. Maines’ memory.

John will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
