Obituary of Herbert C. Hewes
Herbert C. Hewes passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025 at the age of ninety-five. Born on October 2, 1929, Herb grew up in Boston, Massachusetts in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood. As a youth, Herb worked multiple jobs to afford his hobby, dance roller skating. It was at one of his jobs, shelving books at the Boston Public Library, that Herb met his future wife, Marie McCarthy.
Finishing high school at age sixteen, Herb enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the age of seventeen and served at the end of World War II. He deployed to the Pacific Theater as a part of the occupation forces in Okinawa, an experience that he captured through his developing interest in photography. Herb and Marie corresponded through letter writing, while he was overseas, and reunited when he returned to Boston after his service. Through the GI Bill, in the postwar years, Herb earned a degree in physics at Northeastern University.
After graduation, Herb accepted a job offer at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York, where he spent his entire thirty-plus-years career. Marie and Herb settled in nearby Webster, and they raised their four children in the vibrant community with many close friends.
Herb loved to read and cook and continued to develop his passion for photography, winning company awards at Kodak. He had a keen interest in languages; he studied Russian in the 1950s and 1960s and later learned French. Once fluent in French, Herb and Marie treasured their adventures in France, amongst their many world travels. They also loved vacationing on Sanibel Island and Cape Cod. Always one for a challenge, Herb started long-distance running during middle age. During retirement, he and Marie explored their family trees through genealogy, played bridge competitively, and dabbled in bocce.
Herb is predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Marie, as well as his two sisters, Anna Marie and Frances. He leaves his children, Marie “Teri” (Charles) Tracy, James Hewes, Helene Machado, Elizabeth (Michael) Pooler; grandchildren, Kathryn (Giovanni) Rizzi, Anna Tracy (Antonio Piscopo), Marie “Marty” Tracy (Tara Limbaugh), Cara and Christopher Hewes, John (Jessica) Machado, Victoria Machado and Lauren (Liam) McCarthy; great grandchildren, Gabriela and Thomas Rizzi and Isaiah Tracy; brother, Robert Hewes; and beloved nieces and nephews.
