Obituary of Sally Lou Ashley

Sally S. Ashley of Webster passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, on May 23, 2016 at the age of 84.She was born November 2, 1931 to George and Helene Stevens and was married to Robert H Ashley for almost 30 years before his passing in 1983. Sally is survived by two daughters, Sandra Ashley and Sheila Hetrick; two grandchildren, Michael H Ashley and Katrina M Ashley; cousins, David (Patricia) Prior, Margaret Stevens and Susan (Michael)Whitney. Sally also has extended family in Canada. Sally was an elementary teacher. She taught 1-3 grades early in her career and later taught migrant children in Wayne County. The last years of her teaching career were spent teaching special needs children in the Ontario Primary School for which she won an award. Being artistic, Sally enjoyed drawing and painting, which she used often to help her special needs classes understand concepts not easily learned other ways. Painting ceramics was something Sally did for her own enjoyment and as gifts for others. Other activities Sally enjoyed included square dancing, bowling, singing with the Pine Tones, singing in the church choir and ministering to the people in the Heritage Christian Home on Jennifer Lane in Webster. Sally was also a hospice volunteer. Sally enjoyed camping and traveling in the United States and Canada with family. Later in life, Sally visited several countries outside the USA, including Africa, (where she took a hot air balloon ride) Australia, New Zealand, China, England, and Scotland. She also took the bubble train across Canada and walked on a glacier. Whatever she did, Sally was all in. People always came first. She gave with her heart in many quiet ways to many people. We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to all the people who continued to reach out to us during this journey. Mom always lit up when a card, phone call or visitor came. Her face expressed more than she could verbalize but even to the end she was the gracious lady extending thanks to all who touched her life. Family and friends may join us in a memorial service at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 1130 Webster Road, Webster, NY 14580 585-872-2281 on Sunday, May 29 at 2:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the Heritage Christian Homes at 349 W. Commercial St., E. Rochester, NY 14445 or www.heritagechristianservices.org.
